Sophia Akhiyat

Sophia is a graduate of the University of Florida. She was a member of the University Scholars Program of the University of Florida School of Medicine where she conducted research in oncology and viral proteins. She is working with her mentor, Dr. Jeffrey Berger, on writing a textbook chapter regarding stress and fatigue in residency programs, as well as conducting educational research of anesthesia residency training programs.

Eussra El-Magbri

Eussra is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, where she worked as a summer student research intern at the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh looking at the molecular and genetic mechanism that underlie the association between vitamin D insufficiency and asthma. Under the mentorship of Dr. Dinesh Pillai, she will continue this line of research to examine the potential use of exosomes as therapeutic targets to address the two most pressing health care issues seen in children in the US: obesity and asthma.

Nicole Findlay

Nicole is a graduate of McMaster University in Canada and completed her MPH in Epidemiology at the University of Toronto. She has previous research experience in infectious disease, including HIV, and reproductive health. Under the mentorship of Drs. Susie Bathgate and Charles Macri, she is working on a multi-site research protocol on angiogenic biomarkers for the prediction of preeclampsia, as well as the relationship between fibroids and prolonged exposure to estrogen-mimics and other compounds in hair straighteners.

Yodit Tsegaye

Yodit is a graduate of the University of Maryland, College Park. She worked at the NIH as a summer intern in the National Cancer Institute. She is working on the AsthMAP2 study which is trying to determine the role of Vitamin D in asthma severity and asthma control. In the future, her project will focus more on aging and asthma and determining whether or not asthmatics have older stem cells that are not as equipped to respond to lung damage.
