GW: Collecting Social Media Data (Virtual)
Collecting Social Media Data (Virtual)
Interested in studying social media for your class or scholarly research? In this workshop, you will understand how to acquire social media for your research, focusing on Twitter. The workshop will include an overview of social media APIs and data formats, before exploring Twitter’s API in depth. Presenter will also discuss how to find and re-use existing datasets and collect new datasets. There will be an opportunity to work hands-on with Social Feed Manager and TweetSets, open-source tools created at GW Libraries for social media data.
Attendees will learn what social media APIs are and what data Twitter provides via its public APIs; understand how tools such as Social Feed Manager can be used to collect social media as data and the limitations on collecting; and be able to identify key ethical, legal, and privacy considerations are for working with social media data.
All sessions are free to GW students, faculty, staff, and alumni.
