Cultural and linguistic competence is necessary to mitigate long-standing research priorities and methodologies that have resulted in underrepresentation of diverse racial and ethnic groups relative to their proportion of the population and their disease burden. Cultural competence and linguistic competence are viewed as essential approaches for reducing disparities in health and health care and for promoting equity by improving access, utilization, service delivery, and health status and outcomes. While the evidence suggests the efficacy of these approaches in health care, many organizations continue to struggle with the integration of cultural and linguistic competence in the conduct of research. This presentation will:
1. Explore the multiple dimensions of culture and their relevance for clinical research;
2. Define and describe a framework for cultural competence at the individual and organizational levels;
3. Define linguistic competence; and
4. Delineate the implications of cultural and linguistic competence in all phases in the conduct of clinical research.
