2012 Mentor Conference
Program Description
Among several goals of the CTSA is the enhancement of the training and career development of clinical and translational scientists. A critical step towards achieving this goal is the fostering of a culture and use of best practices of mentorship at our institutions.
In 2011 - 2012, we piloted the Mentor Development Program as a six-month seminar series in two select departments at George Washington University and Children's National Hospital. After receiving feedback from the participants, we re-structured the Mentor Development Program to a 1 1/2-day conference with follow-up sessions planned throughout the year.
For faculty of any discipline at all colleges and schools at The George Washington University who are currently mentors or aspire to become effective mentors.
Learning Objectives:
- After attending the conference, attendees will be able to:
- Apply mentoring best practices in relationships with junior faculty and trainees;
- Communicate effectively with mentees from diverse backgrounds;
- Foster a mentee’s independence while establishing clear expectations and boundaries;
- Explore promotion and tenure policies and how they impact career development of junior faculty;
- Articulate a mentoring philosophy and prepare a mentoring plan with a mentee;
- Develop a leadership plan for an interdisciplinary team
